Subject: Data Model for Dry Cleaners Question: A dry cleaners requires a database to keep track of its customers and their garments. The dry cleaners cleans various different types of garment and articles for its many customers. A recent analysis revealed that 90% of its customers are repeat business. With this in mind, the dry cleaners wishes to start to track its customers. This will allow for more careful analysis in the future and may lead to future customer loyalty and marketing programs. Customers may leave-in several articles at one time. Some articles may be ready sooner than others. As such, articles must be tracked separately through the system. Customers may also leave garments in for repair. Articles for cleaning may fall into one of several article-types each of which has a separate price and number of days to complete. Article-types include: suit, coat, bedspread, shirt. Repair items also have several repair-types including button, zip, hem, take-ins and let-outs, each of which has a different price. Articles sometimes have bad stains which may require special attention. Customers will typically indicate this when items are left in. Any special requirements or notes are recorded on both items to be cleaned or repaired. Details of the staff member who received the order will also be noted on both items to be cleaned or repaired. Along with the details of the article, the expected return date is noted. Once the item has been picked up the pick-up date is noted in the system. In order to be more customer-centric the dry cleaners wishes to implement a customer complaint tracking system. This will be a straightforward log of complaints which are made by customers. Complaints may relate directly to an item which was dry cleaned but this is not necessarily always the case. Some complaints are just general e.g. “why aren’t you open on Saturdays”. Items for repair will not be subject to complaint.
