2) This Alternative Design shows the Color explicitly.
Any other characteristic that occurred frequently could also be shown explicitly.
When it did not apply to a particular product, it would simply be left blank, or NULL, (preferably NULL).
This makes the corresponding Database easier to use and understand.
There is no downside to this approach. A Data Modelling purist might object but the design is perfectly acceptable.
